In all music classes throughout the school, we have begun rehearsing for the summer show: The students of IS33 will be performing the musical “Matilda Jr.”. The classic Roald Dahl story was recently made into a film on Netflix that has captivated audiences with its catchy music by Tim Minchin and striking visuals. Given the popularity of the film, it was the perfect moment to get students involved in IS33’s first attempt at a full musical. The “junior” format is specially adapted for younger actors and audiences, with simplified versions of the songs and a modified script.

The main roles of the show will be played by students who participate in the after school musical theater club but we couldn’t forget the rest of the school, who have been cast as the students at Crunchem Hall. Each class will sing and dance in a variety of musical numbers from the show, with the most well-known and well-loved songs being performed by the whole school.

It is an ambitious project but motivation has never been higher in music classes. The themes of the show really resonate with students: courage, justice, fairness, friendship, and the role that one teacher can play in a child’s life. These are all values that we hold dear at IS33 so the selection of “Matilda Jr.” was a natural fit for this year’s production. We can’t wait to perform the show at the end of the year.
